The intensity of the canine responses and the feeling of powerlessness on the human end of the leash might be overwhelming, but there is hope for training reactive dogs. Aversive-based training is when you use positive punishment and negative reinforcement techniques with your dog. Reward-based methods use rewards only for the behaviors that you want your dog to follow. Dogs tend to respond better to reward-based training than they do to punishment. You may want to use edible treats to reward your dog when they perform the way you want them to. You can also use a favorite toy, verbal praise, and loving touch. Individualized or one-to-one training is helpful for the trainer to focus on an individual dog’s abilities and needs, as well as address a specific owner’s preferences and circumstance.

It happens quickly and is easy to miss, particularly in smaller dogs. A yawn doesn’t necessarily mean your dog needs a nap, so consider the surrounding circumstances when your dog does it.
